File 2003.12: Hackworth v. L&P Industries
Case Type: Line of Sight - Motorcycle Accident
Description:
Case in which a motorcyclist collided with the rear corner of an oncoming truck that was turning into a gas station. Defense counsel argued that the accident was caused because of ground elevation conditions at the scene and the motorcyclist's high rate of speed. Additionally, the truck's driver was unable to see over the crest of the hill when he made his turn.
Phase 1, Pre-Visualization and Measurement:
Fearless Eye collected defense counsel's witness accounts and engineer's measurements of accident scene and surrounding topography. 3D models of the accident motorcycle and truck were also produced.
Phase 2, Visualizations Produced:
Several 3D animation views illustrating different scenarios were produced from a "birds' eye view" perspective such that all of the encompassing area could be seen and understood by jury. Scenario 1 showed the vehicle dynamics at actual reported speeds. Scenario 2 showed what would have happened had the motorcyclist been driving slower at the posted, legal MPH limit. Both Scenario 1 and 2 were also displayed in slow motion relative to each other. The visualizations illustrated that the accident could have been avoided if the motorcyclist had been observing the speed limit.
