File 2009.21: Cockrell v. BNSF

Case Type: Railroad Crossing Accident

Description:
A vehicle was struck by a train at this crossing. Initially there was some concern regarding light levels and whether the sun was preventing drivers from seeing the flashing lights, however, upon further investigation it seemed more likely that the lights were not flashing at all at the time of the accident

Visualizations Produced:
Fearless Eye traveled to the site of the accident, performed a laser scan, took photos, measurements and video footage. This information was combined to generate accurate 3D models of the site at the time of the accident. Light levels in the area were also taken to determine whether the flashing warning lights would be visible and aerial photos over many years were also collected. Reviewing these aerial photos revealed a chronic water problem in the area of the crossing which was interfering with the track signals.
