File 2006.14: Bottcher v. Failing
Case Type: Intersection Accident
Description:
The defendant was traveling North at 65 mph with cruise control engaged, while the plaintiff was crossing the Northbound lanes from a stop in the median. The two cars collided and rolled into a nearby ditch. According to the police diagram, the defendant veered to the right before impacting the other vehicle, causing a more direct hit.
Visualizations Produced:
After collecting data, aerial photos, accident photos, and modeling the site and vehicles in 3D, an animation was produced recreating the police accident report to illustrate what happened. Next, a visualization was produced to emphasize what would have happened if the defendant had either decelerated and remained in his lane, moved to the left lane, or stopped to avoid the accident. Exemplifying that the accident could have been avoided.
